Both areas have played a significant role in providing customers across the UK with the right cutting tools for their applications.

Dormer believes its decision to place greater emphasis on training staff and customers on their products is leading to an upturn in the amount of tools being sold to blue chip organisations as well as small and medium sized enterprises.

The increase has also been supported with the recent launch of new a branding strategy for its high performance tools - Spectrum and Elect - which simplifies the decision making process for Dormer’s client base.

Chris Herring, business development manager at Dormer Tools, said: “We have seen a significant increase in the amount of high performance tooling being sold during 2010. It is a case that we are not only selling more products, but we are selling more of the right products.

“A couple of years ago we re-wrote our strategy to shift more focus onto research and development and training to handle any effects of the recession. Since moving to the AMP we have underlined the importance of customer’s application requirements and we are now starting to see the benefits.

“Our research and development centre of excellence is tasked with identifying, devising and delivering new products and machining solutions. Products are only created if there is a market need.

“As soon as a product is launched we provide an extensive amount of training for our national sales staff and distributors to help them identify what products to sell to what customers.

“Increasing their knowledge and understanding of the machining process has enabled them to identify the optimum product for each customer’s requirement. This has then lead to positive results for the client, building Dormer’s reputation as an expert supplier.”

Dormer has its own research and development facilities and also works closely with many of the world’s leading Universities and research institutes to ensure it remains at the forefront of tool design.

Further information is available by contacting Dormer on 0870 850 4466 or by visiting www.dormertools.com.

<sites:pageName>dormeredgesclosertopre-recessionlevels</sites:pageName><sites:revision>1</sites:revision>

Bromley PES and Materialise UK team up for international audience.

Bromley PES and Materialise UK have teamed up to show their combined capabilities in engineering design & rapid manufacturing to an international audience.

The companies had been invited to exhibit within the Sport Technology zone of the Technology World show held recently at London’s ExCeL Arena. The Centre, designed for small and new start business, offers a range of office and workshop units, and Centre staff marked the occasion with some of their current tenant companies.

Since 2000 the Centre has been home to over 200 businesses, creating more than 600 jobs, and many of its former tenants have gone on to become larger, established businesses, operating in global markets. One of these Martek Marine have grown from one workshop unit to a world leader in the manufacture of safety and environmental emissions monitoring systems for the global marine industry, turning over in excess of £7 million per year.

Other alumni of Century Business Centre include; Wren Turbines, who manufacture miniature operational jet engines; CoMap Systems Ltd, which produce control systems for electricity generating equipment; Prototype Creative Ltd, a graphic and website design company; and Industrial Software Limited.

The Centre, owned and managed by Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO), the regeneration arm of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council was originally developed to help local people in the Manvers area of the Dearne Valley to set up their own businesses following the decline of traditional industries.

Amanda Parris, RiDO’s Business Centre Manager said;

“This is an important milestone, not just for Century but for the fact that it started the whole culture of business incubation in Rotherham. It has been really great working with all of the businesses that have being based here over the years, and to see many of them grow and expand.

“It has also being interesting to see the developments around the Manvers area in the last ten years. Back in 2000 Century stood on its own, but now with more commercial and residential developments, the area is a great place to live and work.”

Steve Coulson, Director at Martek Marine commented;

“Choosing Century Business Centre was a great decision in our growth story. The set-up at the Centre gave us the flexibility to develop our business in a rapid, organic way, allowing our business to incubate then accommodating our growth spurts, and eventually allowing us to fend for ourselves without bureaucracy or fuss.

“The business centre itself is only one story; the staff are the true stars. Led by Amanda Parris they always gave us the very best service, and after leaving Century to move into a self contained unit we have continued to progress, even in the harshest trading conditions in living memory.”

Throughout the ten years of its operation, Century has always been popular and at most times over 90% of units have been occupied. Its current tenants include a number of growing and innovative businesses, and one of these Spangles UK Ltd, a fashion jewellery company, recently finished joint runner-up in the HSBC Bank ‘Start-up Stars’ national business competition final, having previously being the competition’s North East regional winner.

The success at Century led the Council to expand the provision for small business incubator premises, and RiDO now has four centres, located across the Borough at Moorgate Crofts, Templeborough and Dinnington providing over 200 office and workshop units.

Councillor Gerald Smith, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Development Services, said;

“I want to congratulate all the past and present companies and RiDO staff that have been part of the achievements at Century Business Centre in the past ten years. It has shown there is a real desire within Rotherham for high quality space for business start-ups, and that with the right supportive environment new businesses can really succeed. Century has become a blueprint for the expansion of incubation and enterprise support services in the Borough, and has played a key role in helping develop Rotherham’s enterprise culture.

“Testament to this fact is recent Royal Mail research which shows the borough as having the second highest number of start-up businesses in the country this year and our recent success in winning the national competition for ‘The Most Enterprising Place in Britain for 2010’, awarded by Enterprise UK. The acknowledgement from this organisation, founded by the British Chambers of Commerce, the CBI, the Federation of Small Businesses and the Institute of Directors to encourage enterprise is a powerful endorsement of our enterprise activities in Rotherham.”

For more information on Century Business Centre and its current tenant companies visit http://www.ridobusinesscentres.co.uk/century-manvers

<sites:pageName>centurybusinesscentre10yearscreatingbusinesssuccessinrotherham</sites:pageName><sites:revision>1</sites:revision>

Newburgh Engineering Secures Major 10 Year Nuclear Contract

Westinghouse Electric UK and Springfields Fuels Ltd. have enhanced its commitment to UK manufacturing, by awarding a major new contract to Rotherham based Newburgh Engineering for the supply of in-core reactor fuel components for use at existing UK nuclear power stations.

Newburgh Engineering secured the 10-year multi-million pound contract, after successfully completing a rigorous tendering process for Springfields Fuels Ltd, which assessed its quality control, health & safety and production systems to meet the stringent requirements of the nuclear fuel industry.

As a supplier of high precision components to the nuclear industry for almost 60 years, Newburgh Engineering has the expertise and dedicated manufacturing capabilities to fulfill the needs of this prestigious contract. has beaten off stiff competition from across the country to be crowned as “The Most Enterprising Place in Britain” 2010.

Rotherham wowed a panel of tough private sector judges to take the top prize in the prestigious “Enterprising Britain” competition for their innovative model for creating a culture of enterprise.

Rotherham Ready, the enterprise education programme, entered the competition under the category of ‘enterprise culture’ showcasing the town’s achievements over the last five years to inspire children and young people about business, enterprise entrepreneurship.

On Monday November 15, the results of the competition were announced at a ceremony at the House of Lords attended by Dragons Den star Peter Jones and BIS minister Mark Prisk.

A delegation from Rotherham including Rotherham Council’s Enterprise Projects Manager Jackie Frost, Rotherham Ready Project Officer Catherine Brentnall, Lauren Stanley (11) and James Wass (13) from St Bernard’s Catholic High School, their enterprising teacher Kevin Wright and Rotherham young entrepreneur Dominic Beck (18) were there to hear the results.

Jackie Frost said: “Winning this award is richly deserved recognition for the effort and passion of everyone involved in developing enterprise in Rotherham.

“Young people in Rotherham need to be enterprising, more so now than ever, and we thank our schools and colleges, our local businesses, entrepreneurs, our partners and colleagues from the council that work so hard to help create a culture of enterprise in the town.”

Three judges visited the town in October to learn more about Rotherham Ready, hearing from Infant, Primary and Secondary school pupils and college students about how they are mentored by local entrepreneurs to develop their enterprise skills and develop businesses.

Local businesses, entrepreneurs, teachers and partners also showed how they work together to support the development of enterprise in education from 4-19 and beyond.

Their stories showed how Rotherham has the complete package for developing enterprise, with Rotherham Ready inspiring children about business as soon as they start school, and Rotherham Youth Enterprise providing all the support young people need to make their business dreams a reality.

Rotherham was also able to demonstrate that its success could be replicated elsewhere, having successfully launched “Hull Ready” in 2008 and exporting “Inspire” enterprise training to Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster, Warrington, Liverpool and even Spain!

Rotherham has been undergoing a profound shift in culture, due to almost 54,000 enterprise interventions in schools between Rotherham Ready and Rotherham Youth Enterprise in the last five years.

Catherine Brentnall, Rotherham Ready Project Officer said: “Creating a culture of enterprise is a national aspiration and we have shown in Rotherham how that can be done.

“Over the long term there will never be more entrepreneurs or more business start ups unless we excite children about these opportunities, and help them develop the skills and aspirations to chase them.”

Rotherham Ready, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, has trained hundreds of teachers to develop enterprise in schools and colleges, and harnessed the passion of the business community to promote enterprise and entrepreneurship in education.

An astounding 103 schools and colleges in Rotherham have also achieved the Warwick Award for Excellence in Enterprise Education, the quality mark for enterprise learning.

Rotherham Youth Enterprise provides start up support, business coaching and incubation workspace for young entrepreneurs, enabling 232 youngsters to start businesses in the last five years.

Now these achievements have been recognised by the town winning the top prize in the national Enterprising Britain awards.

Now in its sixth year, the nationwide competition run by Enterprise UK through the Regional Development Agencies, including Yorkshire Forward, rewards cities, villages, towns and neighbourhoods that have tackled the economic downturn head on and are successfully creating jobs, boosting local business and nurturing entrepreneurial talent as the UK emerges from recession.

John Fox, Director of local pub chain Foxman Pubs, commented: “This is absolutely brilliant news. I’m delighted that Rotherham is well and truly on the map for this work.

“Being a member of the business community in Rotherham it means a lot to be able to contribute to inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs and help make the town a better place.”

John Healey, one of the town’s MPs, who played a critical role in launching Rotherham Ready five years ago added: “Rotherham Ready has had such an impact that it is shaping the curriculum and it will shape the future of Britain.

“Enterprise has been used as a legitimate learning tool and has put the borough at the forefront of innovative teaching on a global scale by enabling students to bridge the gap between business and education.”

<sites:pageName>rotherham-most-enterprising</sites:pageName><sites:revision>2</sites:revision>

Mori Seiki opens new AMP office to support SAMULET aerospace project

Mori Seiki, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of metal cutting machines, has opened an office at the AMP Technology Centre on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham.

The facility next to the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing will provide a base for Mori Seiki’s support of the Strategic Affordable Manufacturing in the UK with Leading Environmental Technology (SAMULET) project.

The aim of SAMULET, which is a collaborative project led by Rolls-Royce between industry and academia, is to ensure that the UK aero-engine industry remains competitive in the face of new 2020 emission targets. From the 2011 season the team will be known as Marussia Virgin Racing.

Virgin Racing was established last year when Manor Motorsport joined forces with WR Technology Limited (Wirth Research) and Virgin to compete in the FIA Formula One World Championship. Marussia Motors is not new either to Formula One or to Virgin Racing - the nascent Russian sportscar company, headed by ex-racer Nikolay Fomenko, has been a partner of Virgin Racing since the F1 team was launched in December 2009.

“This is definitely a good news story for Virgin Racing and for Formula One,” said Graeme Lowdon, Chief Executive of Virgin Racing. “Marussia Motors has been a much-valued team partner throughout the 2010 season and we are delighted to introduce them formally as the significant shareholder in Virgin Racing and a major force in the team’s future. This announcement cements our place on the Formula One grid and is testimony to the hard work and dedication of every single member of our team.”

For Moscow-based Marussia Motors, the purchase of this shareholding reflects the new sportscar manufacturer’s ambitious plans to position itself firmly on the worldwide automotive radar. The aim is to utilise Marussia Virgin Racing as a powerful international marketing platform. This also means that there will be a major Russian presence in the Formula One paddock during the build-up to the inaugural Russian Grand Prix, to be staged in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi in 2014.

“This is the realisation of a dream for Marussia Motors”, confirmed Fomenko. “While manufacturing, launching and marketing the Marussia B1, B2 and other concepts in Europe, we will have a Formula One team to promote these activities and demonstrate to the world that a new car manufacturer has arrived from Russia with truly international ambitions.”

The investment by Marussia Motors, alongside strategic investor LDC, will enable the team to plan more ambitiously for the longer term. Achieving more for less is the obvious imperative, yet the last major lower water technology was front loading washing machines over 50 years ago.

Xeros’ washing innovation saves up to 90% of the water compared to front loading laundry systems and gives the same performance as conventional washing. The University of Leeds spin-out has a patented process which uses reusable plastic beads alongside a fraction of the detergent, to absorb and remove dirt, so has the potential to provide significant benefits in energy and water efficiency and lower effluent.

Over the last 12 months, Xeros has developed a prototype machine that removes the beads from clothes after washing; has confirmed manufacturing and distribution partnerships both in the UK and US; and is gearing up for an initial launch in the commercial laundry market by the end of 2011. The company is also continuing to work towards the development of a household washing system.

The funds were raised from new investors including Entrepreneurs Fund, who led the round, and Parkwalk Advisors Ltd, as well as existing investors including IP Group, and funds managed by EV Limited.

Bill Westwater, Chief Executive of Xeros, said:

“We are delighted with this funding completion. With a download speed of 66Mbps Industrial Personnel have the UK’s fastest broadband connection. The connection makes use of the revolutionary new South Yorkshire fibre optic network, a unique collaboration between Yorkshire Forward and the four local authorities in South Yorkshire.

Phillip Buckley, managing director of Industrial Personnel ltd said, “Like most businesses we are heavily reliant upon the internet to operate. Whether it’s email, accessing recruitment websites or online banking we need to have access at all times. We have been using a standard broadband connection for the past couple of years but we were only getting a speed of around 3Mb. Prior to our IT support company (Digital Exchange) making us aware of the new South Yorkshire capability, our only option for a higher speed connection was a leased line which carried with it installation and rental costs running into the thousands. This simply wasn’t an option for us. Now we have a high speed internet connection that is not only cost effective, but will allow us to grow our business in ways we couldn’t have before. We are already looking at the possibility of video interviewing candidates via Skype or Microsoft Messenger as a way of streamlining the recruitment process.”

Neville Wilkinson, Technical Director of Digital Exchange commented “We have been rolling out DRBSY VDSL connections for a couple of months now with an average connection speed of 35Mbps. We always run a speed test in front of the client to demonstrate the dramatic increase in performance in comparison to their old connection. We were expecting a very quick connection with Industrial Personnel ltd due to their proximity to the street cabinet. When we saw the test results, even we were a little surprised to see such high figures! This level of connectivity at this level of price is simply unmatched anywhere else in the UK, giving South Yorkshire businesses a real competitive advantage. Remote Data Storage, Cloud Computing and High Definition Video Conferencing are just some of possibilities when you are not confined by poor connectivity.”

George Taylor, CEO DRBSY Ltd commented "This is an excellent illustration of the unique capability we have in South Yorkshire, DRBSY are extremely happy to confidently say we have the fastest broadband in the region!
