Crawshaw carves out further expansion

Rotherham-based Crawshaw Butchers continues on its growth curve, with the £4m acquisition of 11 butchers’
shops in the north-west of England.
It also has ambitious plans to open up to 200 new stores over the coming eight years, transforming it from a small regional provider to a nationwide chain. It already has 22 retail outlets and a manufacturing and distribution centre across Yorkshire, Humberside, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
Its latest acquisition, using existing cash resources, is Gabotts Farm, a family-owned butchery and delicatessen 
chain in Astley, Tyldesley, Manchester. Crawshaw said that Gabbotts’ retail format is almost identical to its own, with both companies selling quality fresh meat and food to go at value prices.
The expansion was welcomed by RiDO, Rotherham Investment & Developement Office, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council’s regeneration arm. Its head, Tim O’Connell, said: “This is proof that there is plenty of energy and enterprise among Rotherham companies. Crawshaw’s is a great success story.”
Crawshaw has also now successfully launched10 new shops in Retford, Castleford, Chesterfield, Mansfield, Huddersfield, Doncaster, Bramley, Derby, Sheffield and more recently a factory shop at our head office site in Rotherham.
It says the acquisition will increase earnings immediately and will provide access to customers in a completely new area of the country. 
Crawshaw’s new chief executive, Noel Collett, former CEO of Lidl’s UK operations, said: “This acquisition provides a well-established retail portfolio and factory operation in a new geographical region which is an integral part of our expansion strategy and the start of our exciting journey of achieving 200 stores. The operational synergies and the new supply chain network can rapidly enhance sales and profitability”.
Crawshaw say like for like sales rose 5% in the year to 31st January, building on the previous year’s 11% increase.
The firm has grown exponentially, having responded to public demand for quality at lower prices. The future store expansion has been made possible by the opening of a new factory and distribution centre at Hellaby Industrial Estate.
